Aamir Khan, actor, film producer, and director, gained widespread recognition with his performance in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988). He is renowned for his versatility and commitment to diverse roles, demonstrated in films like Lagaan (2001), Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Taare Zameen Par (2007), and PK (2014). His work often includes social themes, and he is known for his meticulous approach to his roles and his involvement in socially relevant issues. In addition to acting, Khan has directed and produced films. His directorial ventures include Taare Zameen Par and Dhobi Ghat (2011). He also runs the production company Aamir Khan Productions, which has produced several successful films, including recently released Laapataa Ladies, which was screened at Supreme Court.
Amid the screening, Aamir Khan and his ex-wife, filmmaker Kiran Rao, recently had a meaningful discussion with Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud at the Supreme Court, during which Aamir reflected on his career and said, "During COVID, at the age of 56, I realised this is the last leg of my career. I might have 15 more years of active work left, and I wanted to give back. The industry, society, and country have given me so much. I thought I could do one film a year, but as a producer, I can back multiple stories that I feel strongly about."
"Through producing, I can provide a platform for new writers, directors, and everyone involved in the process. Laapataa Ladies is the first step in that direction. I want to promote this kind of talent and hope to produce four to five films a year so that we can see more such movies," he added.
Chief Justice DY Chandrachud also asked about the inspiration behind Laapataa Ladies. Kiran Rao explained that the film originated from an original script by Biplab Goswami, which Aamir Khan had discovered during a Screen Writers Association competition in 2020. They decided to acquire the rights and infused additional humour into the dramatic storyline.
