Adolescence is a British crime drama miniseries created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham and directed by Philip Barantini. The show, starring Owen Cooper, has gained popularity since its debut on Netflix. Now, the Netflix hit drama has made history by becoming the first streaming show to secure the top spot in the UK's weekly TV ratings. With its gripping storyline and stellar performances, it has achieved a significant milestone in the UK television landscape.
Adolescence has outperformed traditional broadcast shows like BBC’s The Apprentice and Death in Paradise, according to official data from the Broadcasters Audience Research Board (BARB).
The first episode of the critically acclaimed series attracted 6.45 million viewers in its debut week, shattering the previous UK streaming record of 6.3 million set by Netflix's Fool Me Once in January 2024. The second episode of Adolescence attracted 5.94 million viewers, followed by The Apprentice and Death in Paradise in third and fourth positions with 5.79 and 5.75 million viewers, respectively, according to a Variety report.
Released on March 13, Adolescence instantly gained global recognition with its heart-wrenching portrayal of 13-year-old Jamie Miller (played by Owen Cooper), who gets arrested on suspicion of murdering a schoolmate. What has made the series the talk of the town is its innovative single-shot filming technique, which adds intensity to the crime drama. The stellar cast of Adolescence includes Stephen Graham, newcomer Owen Cooper, Ashley Walters, Christine Tremarco, and Amelie Pease.
Stephen Graham's crime web series has also garnered an unexpected response from the Indian audience, surprising the creators of the show. After watching the series, Bollywood celebrities praised its narrative and cast performances. The series captivated viewers so much that they questioned whether it was based on a real-life story or fictional. This miniseries is not based on a single real-life incident, but it is inspired by the ongoing crisis of knife crime among young people in the United Kingdom. It is produced by Warp Films, Brad Pitt’s Plan B, and Matriarch Productions.
