Dharmendra-Govinda News: Bollywood has always been full of interesting stories and controversies involving its biggest stars. One such tale that continues to resurface is the alleged incident from the 1990 film Awaargi, in which veteran actor Dharmendra reportedly slapped Hero No. 1 Govinda. The film, directed by Mahesh Bhatt and produced by Dharmendra’s wife Hema Malini, featured Meenakshi Seshadri as the female lead. While Awaargi went on to become a successful film, behind the scenes, it was rumoured that tensions between the actors and filmmakers led to an unexpected altercation.
Why Dharmendra Allegedly Slapped Govinda?
According to reports, Awaargi originally starred only Govinda and Meenakshi Seshadri. However, midway through production, the makers decided to bring in actor Anil Kapoor, which altered the storyline. This change reportedly did not sit well with Govinda, who was unhappy about sharing the screen with another major actor. It is said that Govinda felt his role was being reduced and, in protest, decided to leave the project. This sudden decision allegedly caused chaos for the production team, as it disrupted shooting schedules and budgets.

When producer Hema Malini learnt of Govinda’s exit, she reportedly turned to her husband, Dharmendra, to intervene. Dharmendra, known for his warm nature and respect in the industry, tried to handle the situation calmly. However, reports claim that during a private conversation between the two actors, emotions ran high, leading to Dharmendra allegedly slapping Govinda out of frustration. Some reports even suggest the incident happened on set, though Dharmendra later denied these claims.

After the alleged incident, reports circulated that Govinda was shocked but chose to maintain his composure. Despite the controversy, Dharmendra and Govinda’s relationship did not appear to suffer lasting damage. Awaargi was eventually completed with Anil Kapoor, Meenakshi Seshadri, and Govinda in key roles, and the film turned out to be a critical and commercial success. The film’s story revolves around Azad (played by Anil Kapoor), a gangster who rescues Seema (Meenakshi Seshadri) from a brothel and vows to help her become a singer. Govinda played Dhiren, a man who also falls in love with Seema, leading to emotional and dramatic conflicts.
