Titled 'Unbowed and Unbent,' the episode premiered on July 19, 2026, marking the highly anticipated midpoint of the season. As Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen fights to maintain control of King's Landing, a horrifying chain of events inside the capital leaves her newly seized reign looking more fragile than ever.

The Shocking Massacre Inside King's Landing

The biggest mystery of the episode centres on a series of brutal murders targeting the City Watch.

The narrative opens with Daemon Targaryen learning that two Gold Cloaks have been found dead in Flea Bottom under disturbing circumstances, with their intestines pulled out to ensure a graphic and painful death. As more bodies turn up across the capital, Daemon joins the head of the City Watch, Ser Luthor Largent, to track down the culprit.

Their investigation leads to the capture of an operative. Under interrogation, the captured man confesses that he is working for 'the King.' However, in a shocking twist, this does not refer to the missing Aegon II, but rather Prince Daeron Targaryen, Alicent’s youngest son.

The confession makes it clear that the murders are part of a calculated campaign to eliminate Rhaenyra's supporters from within the city.

The final minutes of the episode deliver a gutting blow. Daemon arrives at the City Watch barracks only to find his men, including Ser Luthor Largent, butchered and arranged around a long table in a gruesome display.

Their eyes have been gouged out, and across the wall, written in blood, are the chilling words, "A FEAST FOR TRAITORS."

This tragic event marks a major departure from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood source material, where Luthor Largent dies during the chaotic Riots of King’s Landing rather than in a targeted assassination.

The show reveals this massacre was masterminded by Ser Ormund Hightower, who used assassins from Flea Bottom to eliminate the City Watch. Before leaving the gruesome scene, Daemon finds a coin bearing Daeron's likeness, confirming that the Greens have officially crowned him as a rival king.

Meanwhile, the war in the Riverlands continues to intensify. Ser Criston Cole and Ser Gwayne Hightower rely on nighttime ambushes to slow down the advancing Black forces.

However, after their horses are crippled by hidden caltrops in the grass, Cole is forced to kill his own wounded animal, further damaging the morale of his weary men.

This major setback exposes a growing divide between the two commanders. Gwayne strongly pushes for a strategic retreat to Tumbleton to merge with Ser Ormund’s main army, but Criston flatly refuses.

Fixated entirely on his own legacy, Cole admits he is actively chasing a warrior's end, hoping that songs of his valiant sacrifice will eventually reach the ears of Queen Alicent. Leading his heavily outnumbered men forward, the episode sets a clear course for the fated historical battle known as the Butcher's Ball.

Crisis Deepens Inside The Red Keep

Away from the active violence, the political situation inside the Red Keep grows incredibly desperate for the remaining Greens. Grand Maester Orwyle quietly delivers moon tea, fearing Helaena’s pregnancy could threaten Rhaenyra’s rule.

Helaena refuses to drink it, leaving a protective Alicent to consume the tea herself.

Later, as a rebel faction scrawls slogans on the walls and breaches the castle, Alicent and Helaena attempt to escape through a hidden passage.

However, their desperate flight ends in disaster when the secret door shuts behind them, leaving the two queens completely trapped within the castle walls as the credits roll.
