John Abraham’s much-awaited action-thriller Tehran is finally set for release after a long delay. The film, which was originally scheduled to hit cinemas in 2023, will now premiere directly on OTT. This unexpected decision has surprised fans, especially as John has often expressed his preference for theatrical releases.On July 31, the makers announced that Tehran will premiere on Zee5 during the Independence Day week.

OTT platform Zee5 long with the announcement, they shared a first-look poster and revealed that the trailer would be released on August 1. The caption for the post read, “A blast in Delhi didn’t just hit an embassy — it awakened a dormant fire. Tehran arrives this Independence Week, only on ZEE5.” While many fans were happy the film was finally releasing, others were disappointed with the decision to skip cinemas. Comments on social media included, “Why OTT?”, “Need it on the big screen,” and “You always said you’d never go straight to OTT.”

Why Is Tehran Movie Heading To OTT?

According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, the shift to OTT was a strategic choice. The film has a runtime of under two hours and includes dialogues in multiple languages like Farsi and English. To maintain realism, the makers believed that Tehran would be better suited for an online platform. However, this reasoning has not been officially confirmed by the film’s team.

John Abraham’s Take On OTT

Interestingly, John has recently shared his views on digital platforms. Speaking to Hindustan Times, he said, “To do OTT, you need a big office setup… I don’t see sense in breaking sweat doing series unless the story really excites me.” He added, “Never say never, but at this point, I don’t want to come on OTT as an actor for a series or original film. I believe I was made for the big screen.”
