Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar, who is a proud single parent to twins Yash and Roohi, recently got candid about feeling lonely despite his success. In a recent podcast Karan spoke about the emptiness that sometimes follows professional achievements. He recalled how, when he received the call informing him about winning the National Award for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, he suddenly realised he had no one special to share that joy with.
Karan Johar in a conversation with Sania Mirza on her podcast Serving It Up With Sania shared,“You feel the loneliest in your highs, not your lows.” He added, “In your lows, you have your friends, family, and children. But when you’re at your highest point, who do you turn to for a hug or a pat on the back?” Karan went on to reveal that during the National Awards ceremony in Delhi, organisers asked him who his plus one. “My mum wasn’t well enough to travel, and my kids are still too young. Everyone else had their partners beside them, and I was alone,” he admitted. “Many nights, when I eat alone, I skip the dining table and eat in my room instead it helps dilute the loneliness,” he said. Yet, Karan still hopes that one day, love might find him. “They say never say never. If it happens, I’ll be ready, standing with open arms like Shah Rukh Khan,” he added.

He spoke about how, in his younger days, he yearned for companionship and experienced heartbreaks that changed him deeply. “Making films helped me heal,” Karan reflected. “But there were days I doubted if people could truly accept me for who I am.” He joked about finding the modern dating scene confusing, saying, “Everyone tells me to ‘put myself out there.’ But where is there? Abroad? Where exactly abroad?”

He laughed while admitting that he avoids couple gatherings and PDA-filled New Year’s parties, saying, “I just can’t handle it. I tell my friends, please get a room!” At 53, Karan Johar still carries hope and humour in equal measure. “I’ve made some of the greatest love stories in Indian cinema,” he said with a grin. “It’s just that mine hasn’t been written yet.”
