Varun Dhawan recalled a chilling episode from the turbulent 1990s, when the underworld’s grip on Hindi cinema led to threats and extortion targeting filmmakers and producers. Reflecting on the era marked by the killings of Gulshan Kumar and Mukesh Duggal, he shared that his father, David Dhawan, also received such calls, though the family initially didn’t realise the seriousness of the situation.

Dhawan shared that during the 1990s, his family received repeated underworld calls but initially failed to recognise the threat, as their staff would argue with the callers and even reveal personal details. He added that the situation turned serious when another actor warned David Dhawan that the caller had escalated to issuing gun threats and knew their address and schedule, forcing the family to relocate for safety.

In a conversation with Yuvaa, Varun Dhawan said, "People were getting underworld calls at that time, and we were getting them too. We had been receiving them for quite some time, but we didn’t realise it because the staff was arguing with whoever was calling. The staff even gave out our full address and told the person where to meet, saying, ‘Come meet me in that garden, I’ll beat you there.’"

The actor further added, "When things escalated, an actor called my dad and said that this had gone out of hand, and that the person was now saying he would come with guns and that he knew our address and office timings. When my dad asked who had said this, he took the staff member’s name. So we had to stay somewhere else that day. It is funny, but it is not funny actually."
