Bengali film superstar Rituparna Sengupta, who played the lead role in Srijit Mukherji’s Rajkahini, has recently shared similarities between her movie and web series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Srijit Mukherji’s movie revolves around the lives of women in a brothel located on the India-Bangladesh border. The film was set against the backdrop of the India-Bangladesh partition. The Bengali actress said the stories were almost similar and termed it obvious as there were freedom struggles shown in both of them. At the same time, citing the difference between both the magnum opus, the Rajkahini actress said that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s web series was more commercial. The actress also shared her desire to work with the director and mentioned that she missed the chance to be a part of Heeramandi.
In an interview with News18 Showsha, Rituparna Sengupta said “I saw a lot of people drawing comparisons between Heeramandi and Rajkahini and these similarities are quite obvious. The stories are almost similar. The backdrop of the revolution and the freedom struggle is the same in both. Those who’ve found similarities have watched Rajkahini and remember what we did in the film.”
“Heeramandi is obviously more commercial in its treatment. We wanted to make our film more magnanimous. Bhansali has his own style of presenting things and he’s unparalleled when it comes to that. We didn’t have that splendour or grandeur but still tried to make the best out of what we had. All of us, girls, gave it our all to infuse life to the characters we played,” she added.
Rituparna Sengupta also claimed that some of her postures were similarly done by Alia Bhatt in Gangubai Kathiawadi.
Furthermore, the actress shared her desire to work with Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She said, “I missed myself in Heeramandi. I was wondering how wonderful it would be if Bhansali had cast me for one of the roles. I wish I catch his attention enough to be his subject someday. I can only hope that he sees my work and calls me to be a part of his films.”
Rituparna starrer Rajkahini was released in 2015. The movie also starred Jaya Ahsan, Jisshu Sengupta, Parno Mittra, Ridhima Ghosh, Priyanka Sarkar, Kaushik Sen, Saswata Chatterjee, Abir Chatterjee, Kanchan Mullick, Rudranil Ghosh, Saayoni Ghosh, Ena Saha, Ditipriya Roy and Sohini Sarkar in pivotal roles. The film later had a Hindi remake Begum Jaan, which starred Vidya Balan in the lead role. Begum Jaan was released in 2017.
