Jagran Correspondent | New Delhi: At least 10 students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have accused a professor of sexual harassment with the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). According to the complaint submitted a month ago, the accused professor used to invite students to gatherings at his on-campus residence, where he allegedly made inappropriate sexual advances. He has also been accused of making lewd remarks during classes. A formal police complaint has not been filed yet.
As the complaint was filed, several students had stepped forward and raised their voices against the alleged behaviour of the professor. Some students have made similar complaints against the same person.
While the ICC is still looking into the allegations, the JNU administration and the Vice-Chancellor’s Office have not yet issued a statement on the incident. The student body has also not shared any updates yet.
Earlier, the professor allegedly made inappropriate remarks with sexual connotations, the source said. In the second week of May, one of the students shared her experience in an unofficial WhatsApp group comprising only students, prompting several others to come forward with similar allegations. A first complaint was registered, followed by several students being called to give their statements.
Previous Incident
Last year, JNU’s executive council dismissed four staff members, including a teaching faculty member accused of sexual harassment and three others in a corruption case. The faculty member dismissed in the sexual harassment case was identified as Swaran Singh, a senior professor at JNU’s School of International Studies.
He was sexually harassing a Japanese official from the Embassy of Japan, HT reported. The JNU administration alleged that the matter took place in 2024 and that both sides were given a chance to present their witnesses.
