Bengal Weather: After a day of sweltering heat, Kolkata received a much-needed spell of refreshing rain on Tuesday night, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. The downpour brought a noticeable drop in temperature by Wednesday morning, offering temporary relief to residents from the oppressive heat.
According to forecasts, South Bengal is also likely to experience thunderstorms on Wednesday. However, despite the rain, some areas may continue to face extreme weather conditions. This pattern of alternating heat and storms is expected to persist through Thursday.
Kolkata experienced a significant drop in temperature on Wednesday morning, with the minimum dipping to 23.2 degrees Celsius- a sharp 6-degree fall from Tuesday’s 29.1 degrees. The overnight thunderstorms were responsible for this sudden cooling.
The sky remained overcast throughout the morning, with occasional sunshine breaking through. According to the Meteorological Department, more thunderstorms are likely to develop in the city by evening, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour.
Apart from Kolkata, most districts in South Bengal are likely to receive scattered rainfall on Wednesday. However, heatwave conditions are also forecast for several areas. Parts of South 24 Parganas and West Midnapore may experience heatwave-like conditions, while Jhargram, Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, and East Midnapore are expected to remain uncomfortably hot.
Strong winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are likely in Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia. Thunderstorm activity is expected to continue into Thursday, with stormy conditions forecast in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, and Jhargram. While storm activity may be less intense in the remaining districts, the risk of severe weather persists across the entire region.
