Bengaluru Traffic: For years, the Hebbal flyover was a nightmare for Bengaluru residents. Long queues, constant honking and slow-moving traffic made even a short journey feel exhausting. Travellers coming from the Byataranapura-Kodigehalli-Esteem Mall stretch often spent 20 to 30 minutes stuck at one of the city’s busiest bottlenecks.
But now with the opening of two new traffic loops, movement across the Hebbal flyover has become noticeably smoother and faster. What was once a slow grind has now turned into a near-continuous flow, cutting travel time from nearly 20 minutes to just about two minutes in some stretches.
According to a Times of India report, a one-kilometre ride along the service road from Esteem Mall to the Hebbal traffic police station took just over two minutes on a two-wheeler, with speeds ranging between 40 and 60 kmph.
A group of riders began from TOI began their journey to conduct a ground-level assessment at 10:34 am near Esteem Mall and entered the Tumakuru Road loop, a section that earlier required 10 to 12 minutes simply to access the flyover. The vehicle exited near Baptist Hospital by 10:35 am. Traffic slowed slightly where vehicles from the airport carriageway merged, particularly near the UAS campus bus stop, CBI Junction and Ganganagar. The rider reached the Mekhri Circle underpass at 10:47 am and was briefly delayed by a three-minute traffic jam.
The journey concluded near Chinnaswamy Stadium on MG Road at 11:05 am, taking roughly 30 minutes in total, a marked improvement compared with earlier commute durations.
However, despite the progress, commuters point out that congestion at Ganganagar and Mekhri Circle still needs attention to ensure consistently smooth travel.
Traffic authorities say the opening of both loops catering to vehicles from KR Pura and Kodigehalli has eliminated the stop-and-go system that previously slowed traffic at the junction.

“With both loops (from the KR Pura and Kodigehalli directions) now open, traffic moves uninterrupted at the Hebbal junction. This has significantly reduced congestion. In fact, vehicle movement on the flyover no longer comes to a halt. Earlier, we followed a stop-and-proceed method, where vehicles in one lane were allowed while movement was halted on the other two. Now, all three lanes, the flyover lane and the two loops are open to vehicles. Driving or riding on these lanes gives motorists the feeling of travelling along a signal-free corridor,” said Karthik Reddy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
