Bihar: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has released the schedule for the biennial elections for nine seats of the Bihar Legislative Council, including the seat vacated by Samrat Choudhary after his election to the state assembly. As per the schedule, the poll body has also announced a bypoll for the seat vacated by former chief minister and JDU chief Nitish Kumar after he decided to shift to the national politics.
The poll body, in its schedule, stated that voting for the nine seats and the by-election will be held on June 18. It asserted that the counting of votes has been scheduled on the same day, adding that the entire process will be completed by June 20.

As per the schedule released by the ECI, notifications for the polls will be issued on June 1 and the last date for filing nominations is June 8. It stated that while verification of the nomination papers will be done on June 9, candidates will have the option to withdraw their nominations till June 11.
The election has been announced as terms of several MLCs are ending, including Kumud Verma, Ghulam Ghous, Mohammad Farooq, Bhishma Sahni, Sanjay Prakash, Samir Kumar Singh and Sunil Kumar Singh. Apart from this, Sribhagwan Singh Kushwaha and Samrat Choudhary vacated their seats last year after getting elected to the Bihar assembly.

The politics of Bihar witnessed massive transition after Nitish Kumar, the JDU veteran and longest serving chief minister of the state, decided to contest the Rajya Sabha polls. Samrat Choudhary, the former deputy chief minister and home minister became the chief minister following his exit.
Nishant Kumar, Nitish Kumar's son, was inducted into the JDU and was given the responsibility of the Health ministry. Apart from this, the two deputy chief ministers in the state was also made from the JDU quota.
