State Bureau, Patna | The ruling Nationa Democratic Alliance (NDA) anounced their nominees for the nine Legislative Council seats. The BJP-led alliance attempted to woo women and extremely backward communities through its candidates. Voting will take place on June 18. Nominations can be filed by June 8.

On Friday, in addition to these eight, the NDA also announced candidates for the by-election for the Council seat vacated by former chief minister Nitish Kumar's resignation.

BJP Names Bhojpuri Singer Pawan Singh For MLC Election

Of the eight, five are extremely backward communities, including two women. The BJP has also nominated Bhojpuri film star Pawan Singh. He is being sent to the Council to counter the rebellious stance of BJP leader and former Union Minister Rajkumar Singh. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Pawan weakened the NDA's prospects in several seats by contesting as an independent from Karakat. All JD-U candidates will be entering the Legislative Council for the first time.

All three, except Sanjay Mayukh, are new faces in the BJP. In addition to Pawan and Sanjay, the BJP has nominated Anil Kumar Thakur and Sheela Pandit for the council. Anil and Sheela belong to the extremely backward castes.

JD-U Bats For Social Engineering

JD-U has three seats in the biennial Legislative Council elections and one for the by-polls. JD-U also holds the one seat vacated by Nitish Kumar's resignation for the by-election. Health Minister Nishant Kumar, JD-U women's cell state president Bharti Mehta, Shivrani Devi Prajapati from West Champaran, and Lalan Prasad from Sheikhpura district have been nominated for the three seats. Of these four seats, three are from the extremely backward castes and one is from the backward castes. Nishant's name was finalized as soon as he became Health Minister.

Mehta holds an LLB from Patna University. Mehta hails from Babubarhi in Madhubani. She holds a BA (Hons) from Patna Women's College and also studied at Mirand House in Delhi. She also holds an LLB from Patna University. She has been a member of the JD-U's National Executive.

Lalan Prasad has been active in the JD-U for a long time. He was declared a candidate in the last Legislative Council elections. After the RJD's Sunil Singh's membership expired, he was nominated to fill the vacant seat. But at the last moment, the Supreme Court ruled to uphold Sunil Singh's membership, and Lalan Prasad missed becoming an MLC. Shivrani Prajapati is the Secretary of the JD-U.

3 Extremely Backward Classes Get Opportunity

The JD-U list of candidates includes three Extremely Backward Classes and one from the Backward Classes. Bharti Mehta belongs to the Noniya caste, Shivrani Prajapati is a potter, and Lalan Prasad belongs to the Dhanuk caste. All three are from the Extremely Backward Classes. Whereas, Nishant belongs to backward caste.
