- This mayoral election is significant because the Congress and AAP, parties of the INDIA bloc, have joined hands to contest the elections in an attempt to remove the BJP, which has been in the mayor's chair for the past eight years.
- According to the agreement, the Congress will contest for senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, while the AAP would contest for mayor. The polls for the posts of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor will be held on Thursday, officials said.
- In the 35-member Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, the BJP has 14 councillors. It also has an ex-officio member MP (Kirron Kher) who has voting rights. There are 13 council members in the AAP and 7 in the Congress. There is one council member for the Shiromani Akali Dal in the House.
- No mobile phone, camera, or other electronic device would be permitted during the voting process in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation office assembly hall, according to municipal officials.
- The mayor is elected by the councillors through secret ballots. Therefore, it is impossible to rule out the potential of cross-voting.
- In 2022 and 2023, the Congress chose not to cast a ballot, which helped the BJP win the mayoral election.
- Elections for the three posts are held every year during the five-year term of the House. This year, the mayor’s seat has been reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category. This time the mayor will be elected for the third term.
- After joining hands with the AAP, a Congress leader said that they would easily win all three positions because they have a total of 20 council members.
- The AAP has nominated Kuldeep Kumar Tita for mayor, while the BJP has fielded Manoj Sonkar. The nominees for senior deputy mayor are Kuljeet Sandhu of the BJP and Gurpreet Singh Gabi of the Congress.
- For the post of deputy mayor, the BJP has fielded Rajinder Sharma while the Congress party’s nominee is Nirmala Devi.
