Chennai Metro Update: In two years, commuters on the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) may get relief from daily traffic congestion as Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II stretch is expected to be operational. A key highlight of this corridor will be the massive interchange station at Sholinganallur, a hub for both IT offices and residential communities.

Chennai Metro: A First-of-Its-Kind Design

The Sholinganallur station is being built with a distinctive layout. The structure will include a plaza, two metro platforms on different levels and even an adjoining eight-storey building connected by a tube. From above, the design resembles a plus sign, with Corridor 3 and Corridor 5 crossing perpendicularly.

Corridor 5 (Madhavaram–Sholinganallur) trains will run on the upper platform at a height of 28.8 metres, while Corridor 3 (Madhavaram–SIPCOT) trains will be on the lower platform at 21.8 metres. This design will make interchanging between the two corridors faster and easier for passengers.

Chennai Metro: Eight-Storey Building Linked To Metro

An eight-storey building will be located next to the station, linked by a passage. The train from Corridor 5 will briefly pass through its fifth floor before descending to the Corridor 3 platform. While there will be no boarding facility at this point, the building itself is planned for parking, retail, and office use.

The first floor will serve as a parking area, while the top floors are likely to be developed for commercial or office purposes.

Chennai Metro: Plaza And Urban Features

At the Sholinganallur station, the first level will have a plaza designed as a leisure and activity zone, similar to Kathipara Urban Square. Above it, the second level will feature a grade separator, followed by the Corridor 3 platform on the third level and Corridor 5 on the fourth.

Neighbouring Station At Thoraipakkam

Nearby Thoraipakkam station, also under construction, will have a similar multi-level structure with a plaza, grade separator and Corridor 3 platform. However, passengers will only be able to interchange between Corridor 3 and Corridor 5 at Sholinganallur, making it the key interchange point on this stretch.
