Jagran Correspondent, New Delhi: The redeveloped and upgraded third runway (11R/29L) has formally returned to operation from Sunday to make travel smooth and timely at India’s busiest Indira Gandhi International Airport.
After nearly seven months of extensive reconstruction and strengthening work, it was commissioned upon receipt of DGCA and AAI approvals. With the opening of this runway, all four runways at IGI Airport - 11L/29R, 11R/29L, 09/27, and 10/28 are now operating at full capacity simultaneously.
Under this upgrade, along with strengthening the runway surfacing, a new rapid exit taxiway has been constructed for faster evacuation of aircraft and state-of-the-art airfield ground lighting and navigation system has been installed.
The simultaneous opening of all four runways will significantly benefit travelers during the dense fog expected in Delhi-NCR during the upcoming winter season. Equipped with a CAT-III instrument landing system, these runways are capable of safe landings and takeoffs even in zero to very low visibility.

During times of low visibility, when safety distances between flights need to be increased, having four runways will give air traffic control the option to shift landings and take-offs to different runways, significantly reducing the holding time of aircraft in the air and taxi time on the ground.
This will not only curb the problem of flight diversion and flight delays, but will also save fuel for aircraft and time for passengers.
