In a tragic incident, six people lost their lives while over 50 others were injured after a stampede broke out at Lairai Devi Temple in Goa's Shrigao. The incident took place when the crowd of devotees started moving quickly on a sloping area during the Devi Shree Lairai procession.
The 'Lairai Devi Jatra,' annual procession, is an auspicious event for the Goans. The sudden movement triggered chaos in the densely packed area.
Thousands of devotees from Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka had gathered at the temple for the festival, he said, adding that the exact cause of the stampede would be ascertained after a probe.
Speaking about the incident, Goa CM Pramod Sawant said, "Six people died in the stampede, and over 50 people have been injured. After getting the information, I went to the spot. The injured are being treated in the hospital...More than 50,000 people participate in the Jatra every year. This is an unfortunate incident. PM Modi called me and enquired about the incident. He also assured to provide assistance from the Centre."
Earlier, State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said that at least 30 people were injured. Eight among them were in critical condition and two were referred to the Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.
Eight others were admitted to the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa while 10 were treated for minor injuries.
CM Sawant also visited the hospital and met the injured and their families. He expressed grief over the stampede and informed about his visit to the hospital. He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi talked to him and took stock of the situation.
Taking to X, he said, "Deeply saddened by the tragic stampede at the Lairai Zatra in Shirgaon this morning. I visited the hospital to meet the injured and have assured all possible support to the affected families. I am personally monitoring the situation to ensure that every necessary measure is being taken. Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with me and took detailed stock of the situation, offering his full support during this difficult time!"
