An action plan is being prepared to ensure an uninterrupted power supply for the Rapid Metro in Gurugram after a recent major disruption exposed the problems in the power distribution system. The incident, which took place on Friday, highlighted the risks of relying on a single upstream power source.
New Action Plan For Uninterrupted Service
According to Jagran.com report, authorities now plan to strengthen the network by sourcing power from multiple geographically separated 220 kV substations so that in case one fails, supply can automatically switch to another, preventing service interruptions. Currently, power is supplied from 66 kV substations located in Sector 28 and Sector 56.
However, both substations receive their power feed solely from the 220 kV substation situated in Sector 72. Consequently, Rapid Metro services came to a complete halt for approximately 40 minutes on Friday night. According to reports, such an occurrence had never happened before. It was precisely because of this lack of prior incidents that the need to draw power from 220 kV substations operating in different geographical areas had not previously been addressed.

Rapid Metro Outage
A day ago, at around 8:00 pm, a fire broke out in the current transformer (CT) at the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam’s 220 kV substation in Sector 72 due to an oil leak. This incident resulted in a blackout-like situation in the affected areas that persisted until approximately 11:00 pm. Rapid Metro services were also disrupted for 40 minutes.
As soon as the power supply from Sector 72 was cut off, efforts were initiated to draw power from the 220 kV substation operating in Sector 52. However, this process also took approximately 40 minutes to complete. Due to this delay, passengers had to walk along the tracks to reach the nearest stations.
The entire corridor remained plunged in darkness for 40 minutes. Anil Malik, Executive Engineer at the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam, stated that technical teams immediately activated backup power supplies from alternative sources. He added that Rapid Metro services were fully restored by 8:30 pm.
