Indore Water Contamination: The recent tragic incident of deaths and hospitalisation due to contamination in the drinking water supply pipeline in Madhya Pradesh's Indore has revived a three-decade-old similar horror to the residents when several people fell ill after consuming water contaminated by the decomposing body.
According to a report by Jagran.com, the incident had shocked the Subhash Chowk neighbourhood, triggering fear and concerns among the masses.
What happened 30 years ago?
About 30 years ago, the Subhash Chowk area of Indore suddenly started receiving contaminated water. Upon drinking this water, several of the residents suffered from diarrhea, vomiting, and fever.
Back then, Congress ruled the Indore Municipal Corporation, and Madhukar Verma was the mayor.
The water was supplied to thousands of homes, and a large number of people fell ill. After the reason for a sudden spike in cases was not ascertained, the complaints were referred to the municipal corporation. When the water tank was inspected following these complaints, everyone was shocked to discover the truth.
According to Satyanarayan Sattan, a former MLA and senior BJP leader, a dead body was found in the water tank, completely decomposed, with only its skeleton floating in the water. The flesh and skin of the body were completely dissolved in the water. This water was unknowingly being supplied to the entire area, causing people to become sick.
Body's identity remains mystery
Although no one was killed in that incident, the latest incident has claimed 15 lives and left hundreds of residents ill in Bhagirathi Colony.
As over 30 years have passed, the authorities still have no idea who that person was or who placed the body there.
The police had filed a murder case in the incident, but no one was ever caught or identified.
