Interpol on Tuesday has reportedly issued a Red Notice against fugitive Rishabh Baisoya in connection with the drug trafficking case. The Delhi Police's special cell had framed Baisoya upon seizing cocaine worth Rs 13,000-crore, accusing him of being involved in drug trafficking across the border. The Red Notice ensures an intensified search with the agencies utilising all the ways to track him down to complete the probe. The officials stated that the suspect is son of Virender Singh Baisoya, the alleged kingpin of a drug cartel. They further stated that Baisoya was involved in transportation and directly contributed to the cartel activities.
Apart from the Red Notice against the suspect, the authorities have also urged a ‘trial in absentia' into the matter, reported the Times of India, citing sources. The court had already declared the suspect an absconder after he failed to cooperate with the officials into the matter. The approval of ‘trial in absentia' will be crucial for the authorities as the provisions in the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) states that a criminal case can be proceeded even if the accused is not physically present in the court.
However, the officials informed that the ‘trial in absentia' is only issued against the accused if he has been declared a proclaimed offender by the authorities and has denied to cooperate/ absconded. Earlier in October 2024, the police revealed that the accused was involved in transportation of drugs.
"The search of this SUV, intercepted in Nepal village in Ajnala, Punjab, led the police to seize around 1kg of cocaine/mephedrone on Oct 5. Rishabh and Jatinder were captured on CCTV footage at Hudco Place and at a hotel in Panchsheel Enclave area of Delhi, confirming his active association with the co-accused," the police informed in a document submitted to the court.
