The Congress party on Saturday announced the appointment of Jitu Patwari as the president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, replacing former chief minister Kamal Nath following a massive defeat in the recently concluded Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections. Meanwhile, Deepak Baij will continue to serve as the president of the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee. 

“Hon'ble Congress president has appointed Shri Jitu Patwari as the President of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee, with immediate effect. The party appreciates the contributions of outgoing PCC president, Shri Kamal Nath,” read a statement issued by Congress general secretary KC Venugopal. 

In Chhattisgarh, Charan Das Mahant replaced Bhupesh Baghel as legislature party chief. While Umang Singar will be the new legislature party leader while Hemant Katare will serve as the Deputy Leader in Madhya Pradesh.

The development came after Congress received massive defeat in Hindi heartland states including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. In the recently concluded Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, the BJP won 163 out of the total 230 seats. While the Congress managed to secure only 66 seats.

In the recently concluded Chhattisgarh Assembly elections, the BJP came to power after winning 54 seats. While the Congress managed to get only 35 seats.
