State Bureau, Naidunia, Bhopal | Congress wrote a letter to Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Friday, raising questions over the decline in the number of government schools and lack of facilities.

"The school education budget increases in Madhya Pradesh every year. Numerous claims are being made about equipping schools and improving the quality of education. But 2,426 schools were closed or merged in one year," State Congress President Jitu Patwari wrote in his letter.

Why Are Numbers Of Schools Decreasing, Asks Patwari

He demanded district- and block-wise details of these schools be made public. Patwari also asked why millions of students have left government schools. The Congress leader said in 2024-25, there were 122,120 schools in the state, which decreased to 119,694 in 2025-26. That means 2,426 schools were reduced. However, during the same period, the number of teachers increased from 682,492 to 692,820, he added.

Patwari Questions Transport Services For Students

"The government should disclose what alternative transportation options exist, whether by bicycle, bus, or safe commute, in areas where schools have closed or merged. What impact has the reduction in school numbers had on access and dropout rates?" he asked.

Where and on what basis have the additional teachers been deployed, Patwari asked, adding that where and how are the buildings, land, furniture, and laboratories of the closed schools being used?

Patwari Demands Social Audit Of Schools

He also demanded that no government schools be closed or merged in the next three years, potentially hindering children's access to school. Congress leader also demanded that a social audit be conducted of each closed or merged school and that the education of each child attending that school be publicly disclosed.
