Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has reportedly commenced the preliminary feasibility study to extend the Water Metro services to Cochin International Airport (CIAL). The officials stated that the project will significantly provide relief to the commuters by cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion in the key regions of the city. The ambitious project will ensure that the passengers arrive at the airport by boat from Aluva, avoiding the congestion. The officials stated that the study is likely to be completed within a month, adding that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared after that.
The officials, while providing details, stated that the authority is planning to extend the Water Metro services to the outskirts, reported the Times of India. The water metro has significantly improved the regional connectivity in the city, as it links 38 terminals across 10 island communities. Apart from providing convenience to the daily commuters, the project has also boosted the financial activities. However, the water metro will provide relief to thousands of passengers on a daily basis if it gets connected to the airport.
Earlier last month, the KMRL stated that several new projects will be launched in the upcoming months to boost the regional connectivity. The Kochi Metro and Water Metro will operate additional trains in the upcoming days to manage the surge in passengers during the Onam festival. The authority stated that the trains will operate till 10.45 pm from September 2 to September 4 to provide relief to the commuters.
The Kochi Metro stated that the decision was taken after receiving multiple requests from the authorities and passengers. It further stated that the operation of extra trains will provide convenience to the commuters by significantly cutting the travel time and reducing traffic congestion. It further advised the commuters to follow the guidelines and plan their travel accordingly to avoid any inconveniences.
