Shivkumar Gautam, one of the suspects in the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddique has revealed to the Mumbai police that the Lawrence Bishnoi gang had plans of targeting Aftab Poonawala, the accused in the Shraddha Walkar murder case. The Lawrence Bishnoi gang member revealed that they backed out of the plan because of the tight security Aftab received.
One of the officials from the Mumbai police said that the information has been shared with Delhi police. “Shiva disclosed that Shubham Lonkar, a member of the gang, and other senior figures had expressed intentions to target Aftab. This intelligence has now been shared with the Delhi Police,” a Mumbai police official was quoted as saying by the Times of India. “However, the gang refrained from targeting Poonawala because of his heightened security,” the official stated.
Aftab Poonawala killed Shraddha Walkar in May 2022 by strangling her and then chopping her body into 35 pieces in Delhi. Poonawala allegedly killed the 27-year-old after she pressured him for a serious commitment and marriage. He stored Walker's body parts in the refrigerator for nearly 20 days and disposed of them at several locations in Mehrauli forest of Delhi. The case made the headlines after Shraddha's father filed a missing report in November 2022. Delhi police filed a chargesheet of more than 6600 pages in the case in January 2023. A trial court framed the charges of murder and disappearance against Aftab. The spine-chilling incident led to massive outrage from several organisations related to women's safety.
The notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang has presence in several states of North India and is believed to have an extensive network of over 700 shooters across 11 states. While the gang is linked to criminal activities like extortion and murder, it gained the spotlight after threatening Bollywood star Salman Khan. The gang further took the responsibility of killing Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, NCP leader Baba Siddique, and firing outside the residence of Salman Khan. While Lawrence Bishnoi remains in Ahmedabad's Sabarmati jail, the gang is now led by his brother Anmol Bishnoi and other gangsters.
