'Chor, Chor': Mamata Banerjee Faces Protest, Alleges Assault As She Turns Up At Calcutta HC In Lawyer's Gown | Watch

Days after receiving defeat in the West Bengal Assembly election, former chief minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee appeared before the Calcutta High Court on Thursday. Her appearance in court was in connection with a PIL alleging post-poll violence in the state. Banerjee, in her argument, urged the court to "protect the people of Bengal" and alleged that the police have failed to maintain the law and order in the state.

While presenting her argument, the former chief minister stated that Bengal is not a "bulldozer state", urging the bench to protect the people. "My humble submission is to please protect the people of Bengal. This is not a bulldozer state," Banerjee was quoted as saying by Live Law.

Mamata Banerjee ditched her white Saree and chappals and came to Calcutta High Court in lawyer’s attire.

She thought she will get respect.

"We want immediate protection for the people. In front of police they are capturing and looting houses and offices. I have already given pictures," she added. The TMC chief stated that her family members have been getting serious threats, adding that police should behave properly.

"Out of ten dead, six are Hindus. Please tell police to behave properly. They are not allowing FIRs to be lodged. In my family, 12 year old girls are being threatened with rape," she stated. However, she was surrounded by a group of lawyers, and they opposed her by raising slogans, including "chor chor" (thief).

Before leaving the court premises, Banerjee gestured towards a section of the lawyers and alleged, "They assaulted me". As per the petition filed by the TMC, the party leaders have been assaulted in several districts after the results were announced. Apart from this, it also alleged that the office of TMC was vandalised in several regions.

While praising her efforts, the Trinamool Congress stated that Mamata Banerjee has once again proven that she never leaves the people of Bengal alone during difficult times.
