The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft crashed into a hostel complex shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12, killing 241 passengers and crew, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Only one person managed to survive the crash. The mortal remains of people on board the ill-fated plane are being handed over to their family members and relatives after DNA sampling.
The Ahmedabad plane crash prompted regulatory and safety concerns regarding the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, after which the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mandated a one-time security check for all aircraft before further operations. Complying with that, Air India ordered checks on all its flights. The process is currently underway.
