Guwahati/New Delhi: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) co-convener Ashutosh Ranka and his team were detained in Assam's capital, Guwahati, on Sunday afternoon ahead of a scheduled meeting. According to Ranka, CJP had planned its first regional volunteers' meeting, with several leaders and volunteers expected to attend in the state capital. Meanwhile, reacting sharply to the development, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke claimed that Ranka and the other members of the party were taken to an "unknown location".

While talking to the media, he said, "Himanta Biswa Sarma is scared that if we show the reality of schools in Assam, the country will come to know about their condition. Himanta Biswa Sarma is scared because of how the rights of our people are being taken away in Kaziranga, and how land, forests and water are being taken away and given to corporates."

Moments later, Dipke again took to the social media platform X and said that lawyers were standing outside the venue where Ranka was taken, adding that Assam police were not letting them enter.

CJP's nationwide protest against Gyanesh Kumar

Earlier on Friday, Dipke warned of a massive nationwide protest if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar does not resign. This came a day after the CJP on Thursday threatened to launch a "Jantar Mantar 2.0" style agitation, placing three core demands, including the immediate resignation of Kumar within 48 hours.

In a post on X, Dipke stated that if the CEC refuses to step down, the CJP will launch its protests from Mumbai on October 2, marking Gandhi Jayanti with a pledge to “save democracy” before expanding the movement to cities across India. “If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign by tomorrow, CJP will begin its nationwide protest from Mumbai on 2 October, and take it to cities across India. This Gandhi Jayanti, let's pledge to save democracy,” Dipke wrote.

The CJP’s warning comes amid a row that erupted after a report by The Indian Express pointed to a severe internal rift within India’s top electoral body. The report stated that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had repeatedly objected to decisions made by CEC Gyanesh Kumar, triggering an intense debate over the integrity of the voter database.
