Amid the EC-SIR row, Cockroach Janta Party co-founder Abhijeet Dipke said on Sunday that the Mumbai Police had denied permission for the party to hold a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in the city on October 2.

In a post on X, Dipke wrote, "Mumbai Police has also denied permission for our protest on 2nd October.

Such tactics to suppress citizens’ voices are unacceptable. If we are denied the right to protest, CJP will launch a Jail Bharo Andolan in Mumbai on Gandhi Jayanti. "

This comes after the Cockroach Janta Party called for nationwide protests on October 2 if the CEC did not step down by September 26. The controversy began following allegations of dissent within the Election Commission over its practices and decisions. CJP had said it would launch the countrywide protest from Mumbai.

On September 25, Dipke appealed for a nationwide agitation in a post on X, saying, "If Gyanesh Kumar does not resign by tomorrow, CJP will begin its nationwide protest from Mumbai on 2 October and take it to cities across India." He also urged citizens to pledge to save the country's democracy on Gandhi Jayanti.

CJP founder claims Assam Police detained Ashutosh Ranka

Earlier in the day, CJP founder claimed that its co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka and 40 of its volunteers were detained by police in Assam's Guwahati without being given any reason.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said that if Ranka and the others were not released, he would travel to Assam with more party members and dare Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to arrest them all.

Ranka, who had arrived a day earlier was scheduled to meet CJP volunteers at the residence of opposition Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leader Kunki Chowdhury in the Dispur area near the state secretariat.

Dipke claimed that the outfit's leaders were prevented from holding the meeting.

"The Assam Police has detained Ashutosh Ranka and a CJP team and is taking them to an unknown location. Ashu and co were going to have a small volunteers meet up in Assam," he said in a social media post.

In another post, Dipke said, "Ashu was picked up by the Assam Police from a private residence. They have still not been told under what charges or on what grounds he has been detained. If Ashu is not released, I will go to Assam along with other CJP members. (CM) Himanta (Biswa Sarma) can arrest us all."

Ranka uploaded a video on X that showed him sitting in a moving vehicle with police. He was purportedly heard saying that Sarma had detained him and the CJP volunteers because he was "afraid" of the people of Assam, as the outfit wanted to "expose" the reality of schools in the state.

Ranka said that the action showed the CM was "afraid of being exposed".

"He (Sarma) is scared that if we show the schools here, the country will know the reality. He is afraid that people will know how their rights were being snatched in Kaziranga for the benefit of corporates. Also, man-made floods have taken scores of lives.

"But we are not afraid of him. We know that he won the assembly election by redrawing boundaries of constituencies," Ranka alleged.
