Tamil Nadu Bus Accident: At least eleven people died and more than twenty others were injured after two Tamil Nadu government buses collided head-on near Kummangudi in Sivaganga district on Sunday evening. Police said the crash occurred around 15 kilometres from Karaikudi and several victims were killed instantly due to the force of the impact.
According to officials, one of the buses was travelling from Tiruppur towards Karaikudi, while the other was heading to Dindigul from Karaikudi. The collision on the narrow stretch near Tirupattur left many passengers trapped inside the mangled vehicles. Local residents reached the area quickly and assisted in pulling the injured out of the wreckage before emergency services arrived.
The injured were taken to government hospitals in Sivagangai and Karaikudi for treatment. Authorities said some passengers remain in critical condition, and the toll could rise. A senior police officer said the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, though factors such as over-speeding, poor visibility, or driver fatigue are being examined.
Videos from the scene circulated online, showing bodies laid along the roadside and survivors climbing out of shattered bus fronts. Eyewitnesses described chaotic moments after the crash, with people trapped inside crying for help and locals breaking windows and doors to rescue them. Traffic on the route was disrupted for nearly an hour before police cleared the area.

A case has been registered and crash reconstruction teams are studying skid marks, the damage pattern on both buses and the condition of the road to determine what led to the collision.
This crash comes days after six people were killed in a similar head-on collision involving private buses in Tenkasi. Tamil Nadu continues to record one of the highest numbers of road accidents in India, with more than 67,000 cases reported in 2023.
