Tamil Nadu Minister S. Periyakaruppan has found himself at the centre of a controversy following the emergence of a video that shows him applauding a dance performance by women in “semi-nude” costumes during the birthday celebrations of Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin.

The video has sparked widespread backlash, with many critics labelling the performance as "obscene." The BJP has seized upon the incident, accusing the ruling government of failing to uphold decency and questioning the fitness of Periyakaruppan, who is also a government official, for holding such a post. The party asked why a minister would occupy a government position "solely for entertainment and revelry."

The video, which has been widely shared on social media, shows Periyakaruppan seated in the front row, surrounded by district-level Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) functionaries, as a dance troupe performs on stage. According to a report by India Today, the video captures moments where the minister is seen clapping and engaging with the performers.

The BJP's Tamil Nadu unit responded quickly, labelling the incident a “grave disgrace” and questioning the minister’s commitment to public service. A post on X (formerly Twitter) by the party stated: “How can women in Tamil Nadu voice their grievances when they have to rely on @arivalayam leaders who summon women in semi-nude attire close by, make them dance, and clap in enjoyment?”

The BJP went further, asking: “Why take up a government position just to indulge solely in entertainment and revelry?”

The party used the opportunity to criticise the state government for neglecting serious issues such as law and order, public health, and corruption. The post continued, “With the government’s machinery already broken down by law and order disruptions, health deficiencies, corruption, and malpractices… isn’t it utterly shameful?”

The BJP wrapped up its remarks with a sharp critique of the DMK's political culture: “How can we expect civilised governance from DMK members who have been promoting only body-politics for generations?”. As of now, the DMK has not issued a response to the incident.
