New Delhi: The mystery surrounding a US national arrested near the India-Nepal border on Saturday has deepened, as the American Embassy in India is yet to confirm the identity of the man who claimed to be a former US Navy personnel. According to news agency PTI, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) arrested a man claiming to be an American national while he allegedly attempted to cross into Nepal without valid travel documents through the Indo-Nepal border, officials said on Sunday.
On Saturday, during a routine patrol near border pillar number 516 in the Mainihwa area under Sonauli police station limits, the 22nd Battalion of the SSB intercepted Jordan Brown (36), who claimed to be a resident of California in the United States, they said.

The officials said Brown, who travelled from Bengaluru to the Sonauli border intending to enter Nepal, allegedly tried to flee when SSB personnel stopped him for verification, but they chased and arrested him.
Chinese passport, AI device seized
According to the report, police have recovered a Chinese passport, Nepalese currency, religious books, an AI-powered translation device, and a cellphone, among other items.

The Indian officials have informed the US Embassy in New Delhi and a reply is still awaited. “He was not carrying documents that could confirm his identity. He identified himself as Jordan Brown, a resident of California in the United States. We have informed the US embassy about him,” The Indian Express quoted Maharajganj Superintendent of Police Shakti Mohan Awasthi as saying.
No evidence of suspicion: Official
Officials familiar with the case state that no evidence of suspicious or anti-national activity has been found so far. However, a senior police officer told HT that independent agencies are still verifying his identity, travel history, past international visits, and the exact circumstances of his entry into India.
