The recent results of the Bihar assembly elections have dealt a severe blow to the opposition alliance, triggering increasing bitterness among the coalition partners. The Congress's disappointing performance and the RJD's failure to return to power, despite its claimshave led to a potential fracturing of ties.

Congress-RJD Friction

The Congress has expressed deep dissatisfaction over the seat-sharing arrangement in Bihar, which resulted in "friendly contests" on several seats. There is a growing buzz in political circles that the Congress high command may sever ties with the RJD in Bihar. The party feels that the RJD’s strategy and background are damaging the Congress's vote bank. Although seat-sharing disputes have occurred in the past, the magnitude of this defeat has deepened the rift significantly.

JMM Resentment And Impact On Jharkhand

The fallout from Bihar is likely to have a direct impact on the ruling coalition in Jharkhand. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) harbors deep resentment after being completely ignored in the Bihar election. Despite initial assurances, the JMM was not allocated the seats it requested, leading to talk of an internal review within the party.

Although the new form of the alliance remains unclear, speculation about the RJD parting ways is gaining momentum. If this occurs, Sanjay Prasad Yadav, the minister from the RJD quota in the Hemant Soren cabinet, could be removed.

Government Stability And Future Strategy

Political analysts note that the removal of the RJD would not affect the stability of the Jharkhand government, as the JMM-Congress coalition possesses more than a full majority. This arithmetic is fueling the speculation of a split.

Congress Review: The Congress high command is currently reviewing the Bihar defeat in Delhi. As a key ally in Jharkhand, the Congress will reach a mutual agreement with the JMM before taking the next step.

RJD’s Predicament: There is palpable disappointment in the RJD camp. With no senior leader willing to speak on the internal turmoil, the party faces a difficult road ahead. If the RJD is ousted from the Jharkhand coalition, Tejashwi Yadav will need to devise a new strategy. Furthermore, amidst this indifference, there is a risk of RJD MLAs defecting from the party.
