Stomach upset whether it is bloating, cramps, gas or acidity makes life uncomfortable. While triggers are individual-specific, there are foods that are more likely to trouble the digestive system. These foods can be difficult for the body to process, leading to inflammation, irritation, and discomfort. Understanding which foods may be problematic can help individuals take steps to alleviate symptoms and promote a healthier digestive system. By making informed dietary choices, people can reduce their risk of stomach upset and enjoy a more comfortable and active lifestyle.

In a conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr Anukalp Prakash, Director of Gastroenterology at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram listed some foods that may cause stomach discomfort.

Foods That Cause Stomach Discomfort

Spicy Foods

Chili peppers, hot sauces and highly spiced foods may irritate the lining of the stomach, causing acidity or heartburn, particularly in people with acid reflux or gastritis.

Fried And Greasy Foods

Deep-fried snacks, fast foods and oily curries contain much fat which delays digestion. This makes one feel heavy and bloated and may even induce acid reflux.

Dairy Products

For individuals with lactose intolerance, milk, cheese and ice cream result in bloating, gas and diarrhea because their body cannot digest lactose, the dairy sugar.

Carbonated Drinks

Soda, sparkling water and beer add extra gas into the digestive system, which can result in burping, bloating and stomach pain.

Packaged And Processed Foods

Processed foods like instant noodles, chips and ready-to-eat meals contain a lot of salt, preservatives and unhealthy fats which can irritate the gut and lead to water retention or bloating.

Sweeteners

Beans And Lentils

Keeping a food diary is one way that you may be able to determine which foods make you uncomfortable. Rather than eliminating entire food groups, pay attention to moderation and preparation: in some cases, simply decreasing portion sizes or preparing foods differently can render them more digestible.
