Laser hair removal has experienced a spike in popularity as it promises long-term smooth results without the hassle of shaving or waxing. Clinical studies show you can lose up to 90 per cent of your hair after 6 to 8 sessions. But it is very important that you take care of safety. Major risks of burns, pigmentation, or scarring can occur due to improper preparation, but with expert tips, these are minimised dramatically. You need to prepare for this procedure diligently, have the work done by someone who knows what they are doing, and take good care of your skin after the session.
In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr Dhanraj Chavan, board-certified skin doctor at Clear Skin Clinics, Pune, lists down safety tips before you get your first laser session done.
Understanding The Safety Profile
Modern lasers work by going after the melanin in hair roots, but it does not hurt the skin if done correctly. The FDA-approved lasers, when used by professionals, are safe for people. Studies show that a very few people - approximately 5 out of 100 - have had a bad result if the treatment is given by someone who is trained for it. This number goes up to about 15 to 20 out of 100 if it is done by unqualified practitioners.
Essential Pre-Treatment Steps
To prepare for the procedure, please avoid the sun for four weeks. Tanned or sunburned skin can cause the colour of your skin to change. Dr Dhanraj Chavan states, “Also, avoid plucking, waxing, or threading the spot for six weeks before the treatment.” The laser needs your hair to stay in the follicle for the best results. Dr Dhanraj Chavan adds, “The process needs the patient to shave the spot 24 hours before going for the visit.” This takes the top hair off but leaves the hair in the skin intact, which is targeted for removal.

Tell your dermatologist about all the medicines you take. Some antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and acne medicines can make your skin more sensitive to light.
Post-Treatment Care That Matters
The first 48 hours are important. Your skin will feel tender, something like a mild sunburn. Dr Dhanraj Chavan states, “Use cool compresses on it. Use a gentle, scent-free moisturiser. Avoid hot showers or saunas during this time and skip exercise for 24 to 48 hours.”
Apply broad SPF 30 or 50 for at least four weeks after treatment. Even a little time in the sun can make dark spots appear on your treated skin.

Dr Dhanraj Chavan adds, “Do not scratch or pick at the treated parts, even if you feel a bit of crust forming.” This is a normal part of the healing process. If you see there is too much swelling, blisters, or feel that there might be an infection, get in touch with your dermatologist right away.
Laser hair removal is very safe if done by trained people and if you follow the advice given before and after your treatment. Make sure you pick a clinic with board-certified doctors or with laser workers who are certified and have a doctor watching over them.
