Republic Day 2025: Observed annually on January 26, the significant occasion of Republic Day is observed with grand celebrations across the nation. Republic Day marks the day when the country officially adopted its constitution in 1950. It wasn't until the Indian Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950, that India fully transitioned into a sovereign democratic republic.

Republic Day is a significant celebration as it upholds the principles of justice, equality and the rule of law that form the foundation of India's democracy. Although the country celebrates the day in great style, New Delhi hosts the most famous ceremony, where the President presides over a national parade that highlights India's military prowess, cultural diversity and dedication to democracy.

Republic Day 2025 History

The Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949, but officially came into force on January 26, 1950. This date was chosen to honour the significance of January 26, 1930, when the Indian National Congress had proclaimed Purna Swaraj from British rule. Therefore, Republic Day commemorates both the adoption of the Constitution and India’s transition to a sovereign republic.
