Chronic inhalation of small silica dust particles is the primary cause of white lung syndrome, a respiratory ailment. Also, workers in industries including mining, construction, and specific manufacturing processes make up the majority of the disease's severely afflicted population. Due to exposure to crystalline silica, which is frequently present in granite, sand, and quartz, occupational lung disease develops.
Over time, breathing difficulties, coughing, and chest discomfort are caused by the inhaled particles causing inflammation and scarring in the lungs.

Dr. Shivraj said, "The White Lung Syndrome (also called mysterious pneumonia or undiagnosed pneumonia), first documented in mid-November 2023 in China, is emerging as a major global health concern. The condition primarily affects vulnerable populations, such as young children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Although the exact origins remain elusive, health authorities in the USA speculate it might not be a novel respiratory virus, possibly linked to influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), or mycoplasma pneumonia."

Furthermore, he said, "Treatment per se should focus on combating pneumonia through antibiotics and antivirals while also providing symptomatic relief. Monitoring of vital signs is critical to assessing the need for IV fluid administration and oxygen therapy in cases of low oxygen saturation. Prevention and control strategies such as maintaining a safe distance from the sick, staying at home when exhibiting symptoms, prompt medical care such as getting tested if you develop symptoms, and following the medication are imperative in combating the spread."
