Maharashtra Local Body Poll Result: The ruling Mahayuti alliance registered a massive victory in the recently concluded local bodies polls, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as the single largest party by winning the presidents’ posts in 117 local bodies. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena remained in second position by winning 53 council presidents, followed by the Ajit Pawar-led NCP with 37. The opposition parties, Congress, Uddhav Thackeray's Sena, and NCP (S), faced humiliating defeat as their combined tally remained below 50, even less than that of Shinde's party.

Is Shinde's Party The Real Shiv Sena?

Eknath Shinde, known for his command over the cadre of undivided Shiv Sena, was labeled as a "traitor" and an "opportunist" by the Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders during the division of the party. They also claimed that Shinde had no impact outside Thane, labeling his alliance with the BJP a temporary settlement. However, Shinde has significantly outperformed his old boss Uddhav Thackeray's party in the Lok Sabha 2024, the Assembly election, and the recently concluded local body elections.

Shiv Sena's performance is also a strong message to its ally BJP, as its candidates also emerged victorious against the saffron party in several friendly fight contests. Shinde, while addressing the press after the poll results, stated that the voters have settled the debate of the real Shiv Sena. “Some people used to say that Shiv Sena is only strong in Thane, but that’s not true. Shiv Sena has reached every home, this election has proved the same. Even in small cities, this election has helped Shiv Sena’s bow and arrow rise,” Shinde told the reporters.

“It is eventually the Mahayuti that has emerged victorious. The BJP has hit a century and Shiv Sena has crossed half a century. Our strike rate is also very good. We fought fewer seats and won quite a few of them,” he added. The next major challenge for Shinde's Sena is the election of the much-awaited BMC, where Shiv Sena (UBT) has a stronghold.
