Why Ganga Snan Is Considered Auspicious On Kartik Purnima?

The scriptures have described the great importance of bathing in the Ganges on the day of Kartik Purnima. It is believed that bathing in the Ganges on this sacred day gives the same benefits as bathing in the Ganges throughout the year. Bathing in holy rivers and pilgrimage sites including the Ganga Maiya on this day bestows special blessings.

By taking a sacred dip, offering arghya and tarpan, worshipping Lord Vishnu and Shiva, performing kirtans and doing charity on this sacred day, the devotees can receive the choicest blessings of Shri Hari. It is additionally believed that Lord Vishnu himself frees the devotees from the sin of Brahmahatya and other sins. Moreover, on the day of Kartik Purnima, listening to the Sri Satyanarayan Katha, reciting Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Vishnu Sahasranaam and chanting 'Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya' frees the devotees from sins and debts and receives the blessings of Vishnu.

Spiritual Legends Associated With Kartik Purnima

It is believed that Lord Brahma descended into Brahma Sarovar, Pushkar on the sacred day of Kartik Purnima. Therefore, pilgrims bathe in the sacred Pushkar Sarovar to receive the blessings of the gods on this day. As per the religious beliefs, Lord Shiva killed the demon Tripurasura on this day, which pleased the gods, and Lord Vishnu bestowed upon Shiva the name "Tripurari," which is one of the most popular names of Mahadev.

According to the Puranas, Lord Vishnu took the Matsya avatar to protect religion and the Vedas on the occasion of Kartik Purnima. It is also believed that the gods perform a grand aarti of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Narayan on the Purnima tithi of Kartik Maas, and also light lamps in their honour.

Kartik Purnima 2025: Rituals

As per the religious beliefs, devotees must worship Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on the sacred occasion of Kartik Purnima. Additionally, the Narad Puran states that Lord Kartikeya should be worshipped in order to receive protection and success against enemies.

Devotees must perform Ganga Snan or take a sacred dip in other holy rivers. If this is not possible, they must mix some Gangajal in the bathing water, and perform snan during the Brahma Muhurat. On the evening of Dev Diwali or Kartik Purnima, the devotees should light up their homes with ghee diyas and offer deep daan in temples, tulsi plant, peepal tree and the sacred rivers. Donating food grains, rice, sesame seeds, ghee, etc., on this day brings spiritual and material benefits.
