  1. An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of serious financial-rule breaches.

  3. Potential sanctions include substantial fines and point deductions.

Manchester City’s Premier League campaign has been overshadowed by uncertainty after an independent commission found the club guilty of serious financial rule breaches spanning nine seasons.

Although Pep Guardiola’s side continued their on-field campaign with a 3-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield on October 11, the verdict has raised questions about potential sanctions, the club’s future in the top flight and the wider implications for English football.

The ruling, announced by the Premier League on September 29, concerns alleged breaches between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.

City have denied wrongdoing and appealed, leaving the club and the league waiting for the next stage of a disciplinary process that could have far-reaching consequences.

Manchester City Face Uncertain Future After Guilty Verdict

According to the independent commission’s findings, Manchester City breached financial reporting rules, provided misleading information about revenues and costs, and violated spending limits under Premier League and UEFA regulations. The commission also upheld the majority of the charges relating to the club’s failure to cooperate with the league’s investigation.

The Premier League’s investigation began several years ago, with City formally charged in February 2023. The case has since become one of the most significant disciplinary proceedings in English football.

However, the verdict does not mean sanctions have already been imposed. The commission will consider the punishment separately, while the appeal process could further delay a final resolution.

Points Deduction, Relegation Among Possible Sanctions

Manchester City could face a range of punishments if the guilty verdict is upheld, including a substantial points deduction, a financial penalty or more severe sporting sanctions. Relegation or expulsion from the Premier League have also featured in discussions surrounding the case, although no final punishment has been announced.

The uncertainty has prompted debate among rival clubs and supporters over whether any sanction should affect the current campaign or extend across multiple seasons.

Some clubs reportedly believe that a punishment limited to a single season would not adequately reflect the scale and duration of the breaches.

Manchester City Appeal Could Delay Resolution

City lodged their appeal on October 1, challenging the commission’s findings and arguing that the judgment contains material errors. The club continues to maintain its innocence.

The appeal process is expected to be a crucial next step, with the possibility of further proceedings depending on the outcome. UEFA is also monitoring the case and is expected to consider any potential action after the Premier League’s disciplinary process concludes.
