Google is basically calling Apple out on one of Apple’s strongest narratives — safety. And Google isn’t doing it with vague big talk. It’s backing it with data, surveys, research firms, and hard numbers. Google asserts that Android phone owners, and especially Pixel users, are significantly less likely to encounter scam calls and messages than those carrying iPhones. That is an impressive claim! But Google is clearly positioning AI-based threat detection as a game changer. And the early numbers suggest it’s working.

The survey data

Google shared results from YouGov, which tracked smartphone use patterns across 5,000 smartphone users.

Key takeaways:

- Android users were 58% more likely than iPhone users to report having received no scam texts during the previous week.

- Pixel users were 96% more likely than iPhone users to report zero scam texts.

- iOS users were 65% more likely to have received three or more scam messages.

- 150 per cent more iPhone users said their device wasn’t effective at blocking mobile fraud.

So this isn’t a small margin. It’s a big gap.

What Google says is driving the difference

Google says the advantage is coming from AI running at multiple layers of Android.

Examples:

- Spam filtering in the default Messages app

- On-device scam detection that flags suspicious chats

- Call Screen that answers sketchy calls for you and filters them before the phone even rings properly

This isn’t new hardware. This is machine learning software baked into the OS.

Third-party research agrees (for now)

Google cited Counterpoint Research and Leviathan Security Group.

Counterpoint found AI protections in nine key areas on Android and just two on iOS.

Leviathan went further, saying Pixel devices offer stronger scam defence out of the box — no extra apps required.

Why this matters

This isn’t Apple vs Android fan commentary.

This is about where mobile platforms shift next.

AI isn’t just about camera magic or assistants anymore. It’s becoming the main defensive layer between you and organised financial scams.

And Google is betting that this is the angle where Android wins.
