As India celebrates the 77th Independence Day today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his speech from the Red Fort in New Delhi, highlighted the key achievements of the country. During his address, he added that India is on track to become the third-largest economy to offer one of the most affordable internet across its territories.
With over 700 districts tuned in to the infrastructure, the PM added that the country witnessed the fastest 5G rollout. Among the special highlights of his speech was the announcement concerning the launch of the sixth generation of wireless cellular technology.
According to News18, during his address, he said: "We have formed a 6G task force." Coming to 5G, at the time of the service launch, the PM said: "130 crore Indians are receiving a remarkable gift in the form of 5G, courtesy of both the nation and its telecom industry." He added that 5G was the foundation of "infinite opportunities" in India.
As for updates on 5G, Airtel and Reliance Jio have launched their 5G services in the country for subscribers. The third major player - Vodafone Idea, is yet to announce its 5G rollout in the country. For context, bidding for the 5G spectrum peaked at a total of Rs 1.5 lakh crore.

Jio rolled out nationwide 5G in India on August 14 via its 26GHz mmWave spectrum. The advantages of this tech include higher bandwidth, lower latency, faster speeds (up to two gbps), lesser delays in wireless communication and enterprise-grade connectivity.
According to Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio, "This is one of the fastest 5G roll-outs of this scale globally and gives India a prominent position on the global 5G map." As per an Ericsson Mobility report, India is well placed to become the "fastest growing" 5G region in the world by 2028, with 57 per cent (speculated) mobile users tuning into the service.
