Neuralink, a brain-computer interface firm founded by Elon Musk, announced on Wednesday that the business has created a Blindsight implant that can help patients who have lost both of their eyes see again. The US Food and Drug Administration designated the experimental implant as a "breakthrough device" on Tuesday.

Musk wrote on X that the gadget "will enable even those who have lost both eyes and their optic nerve to see" and added, "Much appreciated, US FDA!"

If "the visual cortex is intact", Musk added, the gadget can also allow people who have been blind since birth to sight for the first time.

"The vision will at first be a low resolution," he said, evoking the visuals of video games. However, Musk noted that future developments in the technology might make it "better than natural vision and enable you to see in infrared, ultraviolet, or even radar wavelengths."

"Many miracles are happening," stated Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, in a social media post. The US FDA and the business have not provided a date for the groundbreaking device's human trials to begin.

Neuralink is also testing an implant meant to allow people with quadriplegia to operate digital gadgets with just their thoughts. Those with spinal cord damage may benefit from the cutting-edge technology. The gadget includes a chip that interprets and sends neurological signals, which can subsequently be sent to other gadgets like a phone or computer.
