With the coming of 5G in India, smartphone companies introduced phones at a blazing-fast speed. However, several smartphone launches did not act in favour of all tech companies. While top players like Samsung launched a couple of smartphones, Vivo has taken the crown of the largest market share in India in the second quarter of 2023, International Data Corporation (IDC) said in a report.
According to IDC, around 17 million 5G phones shipped in Q2 of 2023 with an average selling price (ASP) of $366 (roughly Rs 27,800). Samsung, Vivo and OnePlus dominated the Android sphere, capturing 54 per cent of the market share. iPhone 13 and OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite were the most popular models.

Vivo (excluding iQOO) dethroned Samsung in the second quarter this year with a 16 per cent unit market share, against 15.7 per cent of the South Korean giant. The growth can be partly attributed to the exponential growth of the V series recently.
At the third position is Realme with a share of 12.6 per cent. OPPO is fourth with 11 per cent. Xiaomi, the no. 1 brand in Q2 of 2022, has now slipped to fifth with 11 per cent. Oneplus, Apple and POCO capture 7.2 per cent, 5.5 per cent and 5.0 per cent market share. POCO has witnessed the highest growth Year-on-Year (YoY) with 76.5 per cent expansion. Among the reason was the affordable C series.
Tecno and Infinix continue to capture the ninth and tenth position in the chart with 3.8 per cent and 3.5 per cent shares. Apple holds the title of having the highest ASP at $929 (around Rs 77,000). It grew by 61 per cent YoY.
"Consumers are opting for premium offerings, driven by easy and affordable financing options. IDC expects this growth momentum to continue in the upcoming months in 2023," said Upasana Joshi, Research Manager, IDC India.
