Sora on iOS isn’t just a text-to-video demo anymore. It’s slowly becoming a fully social, creator-driven platform. And OpenAI just dropped three major upgrades that push it deeper into that territory — Character Cameos, Video Stitching, and Leaderboards.
Also — for now — Sora is no longer investigated in the US. Anyone can sign up.
The big one: Character Cameo
This is the feature that changes how people use Sora.
Earlier, you could only use characters from other consenting users. Now you can upload your own mini video+audio of anything—your cat, your toaster, a sketch on A4—and turn it into a reusable character object called a “Cameo”.

And here’s the real “tech product” part:
Once the Cameo is created, you can edit its personality layer with text. Name, behaviour, traits, things you don’t want it to say — basically prompt-level “character guardrails”. This is Sora building its own character graph, and if that scales, that becomes a massive IP layer.
There are also privacy granularities. You control who can use your character — public, followers, mutuals, or locked.
Video Stitching
Sora isn’t just about generating micro clips anymore.
This stitching pipeline lets you merge multiple short clips — Sora generated or not—into longer segments. Transitions auto-handle the coherence between shots. That means Sora is moving toward becoming a lightweight mobile video editor powered by AI.
Leaderboards
Yes, this pushes it fully into the social network layer — rankings for:
- most Cameo’d
- top remixes
- top characters
Which means OpenAI is intentionally pushing user behaviors: remix heavy, character heavy, viral character IP.

What this really means
Sora is evolving into a network of characters and AI-generated IP interactions.
This is the Fortnite/TikTok-style UGC dynamic but for AI-native video.
For tech watchers, this is the clearest signal of what OpenAI wants Sora to be:
- part social platform
- part creative suite
- part character economy
The invite removal is also not a small thing. This is the onboarding ramp before scale.
