Sony has announced a fresh round of price hikes for its PlayStation lineup, and this time it is not limited to one or two regions. The increase is rolling out across key markets including the US, UK, Europe, and Japan. Alongside the consoles, the PlayStation Portal is also getting more expensive.
This is not about new features or upgrades. Nothing changes on the hardware front. What is changing is the price you pay, and Sony says that comes down to the kind of economic pressure companies are dealing with globally right now, including rising costs and ongoing memory shortages.
Why Sony Is Doing This
Sony says it took its time before making this call. In its official statement, the company mentioned that it had “carefully reviewed” the situation before deciding on the increase. The idea, according to Sony, is to keep delivering a consistent gaming experience and maintain the overall quality of its platform and services.
At the same time, the company acknowledges that price hikes are never easy for users. But with production costs rising and supply-side challenges still in play, this seems to be a step it felt was necessary to stay sustainable in the long run.
No Changes To Hardware Or Features
One thing that stands out here is that nothing else is changing. There are no upgrades, no refreshed models, and no added features coming with this price bump. What you are getting is the same hardware and experience, just at a higher cost.
This also lines up with what we have been seeing across the gaming industry. Sony had already raised prices in some markets last year, and other console makers have also been adjusting pricing in recent months. The trend is clear, companies are reacting to a tougher cost environment rather than pushing new hardware at this stage.
New Prices Across Regions
Starting April 2, the pricing shift becomes official. In the US, the standard PlayStation 5 will now retail at $649.99, while the Digital Edition is set at $599.99. The higher-end PlayStation 5 Pro goes up to $899.99. The PlayStation Portal will now cost $249.99.

Over in the UK, the standard PS5 is priced at GBP 569.99, the Digital Edition at GBP 519.99, and the PS5 Pro at GBP 789.99. Europe sees similar numbers, with EUR 649.99 for the standard model, EUR 599.99 for the Digital Edition, and EUR 899.99 for the Pro version.
Japan also gets revised pricing, with the standard PS5 at JPY 97,980, the Digital Edition at JPY 89,980, and the PS5 Pro at JPY 137,980. The PlayStation Portal now comes in at JPY 39,980, while in the UK and Europe it is priced at GBP 219.99 and EUR 249.99 respectively.
