Google is bringing its AI-driven search experience to India with the introduction of AI Mode, a feature that has been designed to make online searching smarter, more interactive and conversational. The feature was first tested in the U.S. back in January this year, and now it is available in English via Google Labs in India.
As Google reports, users have welcomed the experimental rollout in the U.S., appreciating the "speed, quality, and fresh responses" provided by the feature. Emboldened by this reaction, the company is now rolling it out on a larger scale.
What Exactly Is Google's AI Mode?
Consider AI Mode to be the smarter, more assistive version of old-school Google Search. Rather than entering keywords and receiving a list of links, people can now enter longer, more specific questions — and receive in-depth answers drawn from around the web, courtesy of Google's sophisticated AI model, Gemini 2.5.
This isn't about searching per se. It's more of a discussion with a smart AI assistant. Whether you're comparing products, planning a vacation, or learning something intricate, AI Mode lets you ask follow-up questions and drill deeper into the topic — all in one search session.
How It Works
When you turn on AI Mode, your search experience is modified. Ask a question like "How can I improve my IQ?", and Google's Gemini model produces a balanced, conversational answer instead of a typical list of links. You'll also get relevant links in a sidebar if you want to browse sources independently.
If your initial query leads to more questions — say, "What are daily habits to boost IQ?" — AI Mode remembers the context and continues the conversation. This layered search ability brings a more intuitive and fluid feel to the process, much like chatting with a knowledgeable friend who happens to have instant access to the internet.
Powered by Gemini
Yes, Google's AI Mode is constructed upon its Gemini model — the same model that drives its chatbot operations. What differs is the way it processes mixed, multi-modal inputs such as text, images, and voice and enhanced reasoning capabilities.
Unlike other search engines, this one does not merely retrieve links. It composes intelligent responses based on information derived from a variety of online sources. You can even reply back if the initial answer misses the mark.
What's Next?
AI Mode is only the start. Google promises additional features are coming down the pipeline — such as one called Deep Research, which will take your questions even further. In the meantime, AI Mode is available through Google Labs in English, but it should soon roll out over more areas and more languages.
With this release, Google is unequivocally taking search in a more intelligent, user-centric direction — one where searching doesn't quite feel so much like typing into a computer and so little like having a beneficial conversation.
