WhatsApp is preparing one of its biggest policy shifts yet, confirming that it will restrict all third-party AI chatbots from operating on the platform. The updated terms of service will take effect on January 15, 2026, and Meta says the changes are aimed at ensuring that only its in-house AI systems remain active within WhatsApp.

ChatGPT and Copilot Prepare to Exit WhatsApp

The new rules will require AI chatbot providers to cut off access before the deadline, and major players have already started stepping back. OpenAI announced earlier this month that it would wind down its ChatGPT integration. Microsoft followed with a similar statement confirming that Copilot will also leave the platform. Both companies say they are complying with WhatsApp’s revised Business Solution terms.

Users who still interact with ChatGPT via WhatsApp can link their accounts before the cutoff so their chat history remains accessible later. Microsoft, on the other hand, has confirmed that Copilot users will not have a way to carry their conversations forward.

Business API Will Stay, but Only for Support Use Cases

Meta first outlined this policy in October when it informed AI developers that WhatsApp’s Business API would no longer act as a distribution channel for independent chatbot products. The API will stay available to companies providing customer service or essential updates, but the restriction applies to cases where an AI chatbot is the primary product.

A Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch that the purpose of the Business API is to help companies offer support and deliver important information to customers. The spokesperson added that Meta intends to maintain a stable framework that supports the many businesses building communication solutions on WhatsApp.

More AI Companies Expected to Leave the Platform

With the new restrictions, additional AI services like Perplexity are expected to exit soon. Once the rules take effect, Meta’s own AI assistant will be the only chatbot allowed on WhatsApp, marking a major shift in how users interact with AI within the messaging app.
