A migrant worker from Bihar, aged 60, was arrested for raping and killing a five-year-old girl near Hyderabad, police said on Wednesday. The incident took place at Bhanur in Sangareddy district on Monday night. Police said the accused tricked the girl by giving her a soft drink and then dragged her to the cotton fields, where he sexually assaulted and strangled her. 

The victim’s body was found in the fields by the BDL Bhanur police station. According to police, the girl was living with her parents and grandparents at a construction site. Her parents had left for their hometown, entrusting their daughter to her grandparents. 

The grandparents had gone out for work on Monday, leaving the girl alone at the site. When they came back in the evening, they could not find her.

A security guard at the site informed them that he had seen the girl with the migrant worker. The guard and other workers then caught and beat up the suspect. They alerted the police, who arrested the accused after he confessed to the crime.

Police have sent the deceased’s body for a post-mortem examination and filed a case under sections 376 and 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and the Juvenile Justice Act. The accused was also produced before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
