A 17-year-old boy was allegedly kidnapped and brutally tortured by a lawyer and his associates in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district, police said on Sunday. The minor was subjected to torture reportedly after he was spotted drinking soft drinks with the daughter of the accused lawyer. The boy was later rescued by police and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Kalyanpur Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Abhishek Pandey stated that the boy, who is pursuing a Bachelor's degree in pharmacy, was spotted with her classmate when her father, lawyer Braj Narain Nishad, allegedly kidnapped him.
The lawyer, his brother and others allegedly subjected the teenager to severe assault and multiple instances of waterboarding. The boy's family contacted Bithoor police after learning of the threats, leading to his rescue.
Police said the victim was taken to a farmhouse owned by Nishad, where police intervened just as the lawyer and his men were allegedly about to kill him. The boy was admitted to a hospital where he is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit.
Police have registered a case of kidnapping and attempted murder against Braj Narain Nishad, his brother Tej Narain and several unidentified accomplices. However, a group of protesting lawyers claimed the boy had been teasing Nishad’s daughter, a claim police refuted.
Under pressure, authorities also filed a molestation case against the boy under Section 354 of the IPC and Section 7/8 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Following the arrests of Nishad and his brother, local lawyers abstained from work in protest. The Pradeshik Armed Constabulary personnel have been deployed in Bithoor and at local court premises as police prepare to proceed further against the accused.
