Kanpur has secured the top spot in Uttar Pradesh for export growth percentage in the financial year 2024-25, recording a 15.68 per cent increase over the previous year. Exports rose from Rs 8,991 crore in 2023-24 to Rs 10,401 crore in 2024-25 — the highest growth rate achieved by any district in the state last year, according to Alok Srivastava, Assistant Director, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO).

While Kanpur ranked first in growth percentage, it stood third in total foreign exchange earnings, behind Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad. The city’s exports accelerated sharply in the second half of the fiscal year, marking its highest-ever export figures.

Export Rankings for FY 2024-25:

1. Gautam Buddha Nagar  — Rs 94,272 crore (Growth: 11.16 per cent)

2. Ghaziabad — Rs 14,949 crore

3. Kanpur Nagar — Rs 10,401 crore (Growth: 15.68 per cent)

4. Moradabad — Rs 10,391 crore

5. Agra — Rs 7,555 crore

Statewide, Uttar Pradesh posted a record export figure of Rs 1,86,059 crore in 2024-25, surpassing all previous years. The leading export category from Kanpur was leather products, valued at over Rs 6,000 crore, while the state’s highest export category overall was engineering goods, followed by garments, handicrafts, leather products, and electronics.

Industry leaders attribute Kanpur’s resurgence to growth in the leather and MSME sectors, along with its strategic advantage of being near NCR. “Kanpur is expanding rapidly in leather exports, and with plans for a leather park, exports are likely to grow further,” said Asad Iraqi, Regional Chairman, Leather Export Council.

Alok Agarwal, National Senior Vice President of IIA, added, “The MSME sector in Kanpur is also growing fast, boosting exports alongside leather. The current momentum shows Kanpur is regaining its industrial strength.”
